Australians and Temporary Car Insurance
It is possible to get temporary car insurance in the UK even if you are an Australian national, with an Australian driving licence. The reason for this, apparently, is because driving conditions in Australia are very similar to those in the UK so an Aussie should be able to feel quite at home on our UK roads, part from the inevitable congestion of course.
There are one or two conditions, of which the following are examples but my no means a complete list.
The applicant should hold a full current Australian driving licence, which he or she should have held for at least a year. There are age limits; under normal circumstances a minimum age of 23 would be expected, but this can vary according to other factors.
Like all insurance companies, the temporary car insurance companies welcome careful drivers but are very chary of poor ones so cover is unlikely to be offered to anyone who, during the last three years, has had driving convictions involving alcohol, drugs, careless or reckless driving or TWOC (which is short hand for 'taking without owner's consent').
Honesty is greatly prized as well; applicants would be expected not to have had any convictions over the last five years, or pending police investigations, for fraud, dishonesty, handling stolen goods, etc etc.
The car can only be used for social, domestic and pleasure purposes; the mind boggles; but cannot be used for carrying goods or people for payment. Neither can it be used in the vicinity of a dangerous location. This is a term which is of course open to interpretation but as a general rule you would be expected to avoid military camps, oil terminals, nuclear facilities, or any other places where explosive or highly inflammable materials are produced or stored.
You cannot, sadly, bring your own car over to the UK and use temporary car insurance because the vehicle will have had to have been originally registered in the UK, and continued to be so. No modifications, apart from those made by the original manufacturer, would be allowed.
If you have managed to navigate right through this maze you will be pleased to know that getting a policy online only takes a few minutes, and the documents are with you within seconds since they are sent to you by e-mail. You will need to have your driving licence and passport details handy; when asked for a postcode please enter the one for the address you are staying at in the UK, not your Australian one.
Enjoyed your stay here!
