Temporary Car Insurance for towing a caravan
Many people who own mobile caravans also own family cars which are not really up to the task of towing those vans around our British roads, many of which can be extremely steep and difficult enough for cars to get up, let alone those encumbered by a heavy load. This has meant that a lot of families have had to buy a large car simply for towing the caravan, and since this only happens in most cases fairly irregularly this can work out as a very expensive option.
Happily, we can now buy short term car insurance for a vehicle, which will be covered for towing a domestic mobile caravan. This cover also extends to towing a boat or trailer. The only additional condition would be that although the car would be covered for comprehensive risks, the towed item would be insured for third party risks only, which would mean that if it was damaged in an accident the insurance company would not pay for it, even though the car would be covered.
The vehicle to be insured would have to either belong to the driver, or alternatively be borrowed from a friend, relative, or neighbour. It cannot be a vehicle which has been hired, neither can it be one that has been borrowed from a hire company.
Cars or Private light vans are acceptable, provided that they are under 3.5 t gross vehicle weight with not more than eight seats, unmodified and valued at not more than ?75,000. The usual caveats apply; no carriage of dangerous goods, no driving at hazardous locations (a rather vague term, but common sense tells us when this applies) and use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes only; carrying goods or other people for hire or reward would invalidate the insurance.
There are of course other terms and conditions, but these would be made clear during the quotation process.
